LOT 80 (composed of Miche the lyricist and Yanick the songstress) recently completed their “LateBloomer” EP and ComplexSimplicity caught up with twosome after the EP Release showcase at the Apache CafĂ© in downtown Atlanta.  We spoke with the ladies about their musical past, their unique style and received a few words of wisdom.

CS Natural Beauty: Elaine

You all may remember how long my "natural hair" journey was.. it literally lasted about *snaps* that long.  However, I decided to get some insight from people that actually stayed with the process, so meet our first CS Natural Beauty: Elaine!
Natural for 8 years and counting, Elaine explains what inspired her to become natural, her hair routine, and if she'll ever go back to the "white stuff".

Name: Elaine
Age: 31
Location: NC

ComplexSimplicity:  What or who inspired you to go natural?
Elaine:  I always admired anyone that I saw with healthy, neat locs. After years of admiring other people's locs, I was inspired to begin my own loc journey.  I let go of other people's perception of beauty and embraced my own perception of beauty for myself.

CS:  Was it a spontaneous decision or a process?
Elaine:  Yes and no...Although, I debated for 6 or 7 years whether or not to grow locs, it was when I received my last relaxer in March 2002 that I "woke up" and said no more relaxers, I'm going to do what I want and grow locs!

CS:  How long have you been natural and/or had your locs?
Elaine:  I have been natural for 8 years.

CS:  What is your hair routine? How often do you do it?
Elaine:  I wash my locs with Taliah Waajid Stimulating Herbal Cleanser and Carol's Daughter Tui hair Shampoo every 2-weeks.  However, I do not twist my locs every 2-weeks. I believe if I twist my locs too often they will thin out, thus, decreasing the longevity/life of my locs. I moisten my scalp lightly with water and apply Nature's Blessings Hair Pomade directly to the scalp once a week since my scalp tends to soak up moisture.  I usually tighten my locs once or twice a month after my hair and scalp has been washed and oiled.  Since my scalp and hair are oiled with the Nature's Blessings after the wash, I simply spray my locs with water to keep my locs moist while I tighten my hair by re-twisting the new growth around the locs.  I usually air dry but if I need my locs dried quickly I sit under a hooded drier for 45 minutes to 1 hour and a half.

CS:  What's the best thing about being natural?
Elaine:  My locs represent a sense of freedom. Freedom from other people's perception of beauty and freedom from the pain that relaxed hair can bring, such as chemical burns and damaged hair that falls out or does not grow. I love the versatility of my locs and most importantly, I LOVE how BEAUTIFUL and CONFIDENT I feel with my natural hair!

CS:  Do you think you'll ever go back to a relaxer?
Elaine:  I can not say for sure whether or not I would go back to a relaxer. I think as women our looks are ever evolving, thus, changing your hair is a part of that evolution. One day I may decide that I want relaxed hair again but today I can say that I do NOT miss "the creamy crack." :-)

Escaping the Real World... to Paradyce

Most college guys, along with receiving their education, are busy trying to get with the prettiest girls on campus, attempting to become members of the fraternity they wish to join, or chilling on the basketball courts waiting for the next game. But for clothing designer, Pierre Batchler, college was a time to gain knowledge of our history, grow into a better man, and to build on his love of fashion.

During his sophomore year at North Carolina Central University, Batchler created Paradyce Clothing, Inc. Merging modest, but distinctive individual style, Paradyce Clothing, fashionably introduces the world to a cooler approach of clothing. Join ComplexSimplicity by “Escaping the Real World” for a moment, and allow us to take you to Paradyce…

Effortless Vogue: Rita

Once a month, ComplexSimplicity will spotlight one of our readers that set themselves apart from others by walking down their own runways! We are excited to see what clothes and accessories our readers are wearing to distinguish themselves from others. Effortless Vogue is a forum to inspire our readers to always look their best; highlighting complex style and simple individuality!

This month, CS chooses Rita:

I've known Rita for about a decade, and let me say that this lady has morphed into a full-fledged style trendsetter. From mixing affordable pieces with funky new-age flair, to adapting colorful garb straight from Vogue itself and working all those elements into the "everyday" world, Rita IS a fashion maverick!

CS: How would you describe your current style?
Rita: LOTS of colors, dresses and patterns. I wear what I want and don't seek the approval of others in the process.

CS: How long did it take you to come "into" your sense of style? Otherwise, how do you know your current style is YOU?
Rita: I didn't come into my sense of style until maybe a few years ago. I stopped worrying about what everyone else was wearing or what everyone "liked" for me to wear and started focusing on things I liked. Since I came into my style and became comfortable with it, I never asked anyone's opinion of what they liked, And if they gave their opinion anyway, I told them to keep it. Ha!

CS: What designers do you adore?
Rita: I love Patricia Fields! (For those not familiar with Ms. Fields, she styles the ladies for Sex And The City. Need I say more?? LOL) Keith Harring for Patricia Fields is also a favorite of mine. Anyone producing a high quality product that is different and beautiful is a designer I adore! :)

CS: When choosing pieces, what do you take into consideration?
Rita: I don't weigh too many factors in before choosing pieces. If I love it, I will buy it! I don't have to have a set place to wear it or a certain shoe to wear it with, that will all come later. (laughs) I believe if you love it and can afford it, buy it!

CS: What is on your fashion wishlist right now?
Rita: The all white Hermes Birkin bag & the black and white Gucci aviator sunglasses.

CS: What is your one tip for other fashionistas out there?
Rita: Be free when it comes to fashion Wear what you want regardless of the opinion of others. If you love it, rock it and make them want it!!

Your Exclusive Invite: The Elion Show

Born and raised in North Carolina, the charismatic and talented Elion the Great knew early on that music was his passion. While other high school guys were trying to make the varsity basketball team, Elion was singing, rapping and trying to gain knowledge of the music industry that he desired to be a part of. During first quarter 2009, he released The Elion Show, shortly followed by The Facelift. In addition to that, his voice has been featured on several mix tapes, one of which includes The Amber Rose Freestyle tape, produced by Judah & Dub MD. His latest mix tape, The Front Lobby, is a platform for the multi – talented artist exhibiting impressive lyrics, clever hooks, and thought provoking songs. “This mix tape (The Front Lobby) is an interlude to The Elion Show II – The Sequel.” explained by Elion. My personal favorites are “Better Know That,” “What You Know,” and the title track, “The Front Lobby.”

"I wanted to be the one the DJ was spinning, the one the people rocked to."
He’s definitely been on his grind! As a friend of Elion’s, I’m proud of the progress he’s made. I am a witness to the growth in his talent! The surname he has chosen is definitely one that he must be prepared and avid about the challenges he must live up to. Believing he will accomplish all of his goals by showing and proving to listeners, I know Elion will be nothing less than Great.

ComplexSimplicity garnered a little insight into the world of Elion the Great. He took some time away from his daily grind of writing and rapping to chat with us about his music, influences, and his plans for the future. We decided on a 50 Cent Q&A session, so here are 21 questions with Elion the Great:
